Adoption in Blugar's

  • What are the requirements to being adoption parents?
Depends on who the agency is, who has the child. For religious institutions, with faithful followers who can feed, clothe and provide with at least occupational education with the following exceptions: Bonig (Bene Gesserit) will place a child with a Royal Clan family, but never Kirmse or Kaka Tora. Wololita will place a child with retired adventurers, dojo masters, landed town guards (usually tied to a city, not a clan), and occasionally monkish orders. The non-religious agencies also vary; with Brotherhood of the Bone, if they don’t eat the child, they sell them into slavery, so they require money. With clans, they generally look for clan members of good standing who do not have children, or who have older children.
  • What are the age limitations? Too young or too old, both child and parents.
Children can be as young as a minute and as old as 18. Most religious agencies like the parents to be at least 20 years old, and if in good health up to 30+age of the child.
  • What is the process? I presume the laws are empire-based and not clan- or fief-based, since they need to be consistent throughout the empire to be useful.
If the child is a free-born, then there is no general law. If the child is born of a slave, then the fief of birth determines if the child is a slave or not. If a slave, sold into a slave holding family or directly to slaves.
  • What kind of records are kept?
Some agencies keep records, usually local only. If the child is a slave, then the adoption requires signing a form to be delivered to Katmandu. If the Bene Gesserits are involved, they keep a secret database centrally.
  • How does slavery work with adoption?
    • If slaves adopt a free child in a full slavery town, is the child now recognized as a slave?
      Yes
    • If slaves adopt a slave child in a limited slavery town, is the child still a slave?
      Yes
    • If free people adopt a slave child in a full slavery town, is it still a slave?
Yes, but as owners they can release them from slavery.
    • If free people adopt a slave child in a limited slavery town, is it still a slave?
Yes, but as owners they can release them from slavery.
